LINCOSPECTIN 100

DESCRIPTION

This product is a combination of 2 antibiotics: lincomycin, a lincosamine, and spectinomycin, an aminocyclitol with properties comparable to those of the amino-glycosides. Lincomycin disturbs bacterial protein synthesis through its binding with the 50S ribosomal subunit, hampering the interaction of bacterial transfer RNA with this subunit. Spectinomycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis at the level of the 30S ribosomal subunit of the bacterial cell. 

Spectinomycin has a broad spectrum of activity, acting against Gram-positive cocs, Gram-negative bacteria and mycoplasmas. Lincomycin is active against Gram-positive cocs, anaerobes, Mycoplasma spp. and spirocheten (Treponema, Leptospiren). Resistance to both components arises slowly through mutation or through R-plasmides. The combination lincomycin-spectinomycin acts, concentration dependent, bacteriostatic or bactericide, but always in a concentration much lower as with separate administration. Spectinomycin is slowly absorbed from the gut, but also excreted slowly. Lincomycin has a better intestinal absorption. It disappears quickly out of the blood, due to high concentration in the tissues. Lincomycin has a pronounced lipofilic character, explaining the high tissue concentrations, sometimes 5-10 times plasma concentration, and the large distribution volume.

INDICATIONS

Pigs: treatment of pig dysentery

Poultry: prevention and treatment of chronic airsacculitis

CONTRA-INDICATIONS

The administration of ANCOSPECTIN 100 to species other than pigs and poultry is contra-indicated.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Water soluble powder for administration in the drinking water or feed.

Pigs:

During 1 week daily 1 package of 150 g dissolved in 1600 L drinking water or 1 measured spoon of 10 g per 105 L drinking water.

Poultry:

Preventative treatment:

- During the first 3 to 5 days: 1 package of 150 g dissolved in 200 L drinking water (or 1 measured spooon of 10 g per 13 L drinking water)

- During the 4th week of their life or during periods of stress (eg. vaccination): during 1 to 3 days 1 package of 150g dissolved in 200 L drinking water (or 1 measured spoon of 10 g per 13 L) during 12h. Unmedicated water is administered the rest of the day.

Curative treatment:

From the first symptoms on, give for 5- 10 days daily 1 package of 150 g dissolved in 160 L drinking water or 1 measured spoon of 10 g per 10 L drinking water.

UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS

Sometimes mild diarrhoea may occur.

Following long term administration fungal infections may arise.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS FOR USE AND WARNINGS

It is advised to prepare fresh solutions daily.

Incompatibilities: the powder is incompatible with alkaline products (eg. sodium carbonate).

Use during pregnancy: LINCOSPECTIN 100 can be used during pregnancy without any danger.

Interactions with other drugs: the activity of the powder is hampered by concommitant administration of kaolin.

Measurement in case of overdosing: when diarrhoea occurs, stop the therapy.
